Subaru with a Burning Smell...
It's Not Always fron the Valve Cover Gasket
2003 Subaru Outback (Base), 2.5
Burning Smell, Replaced Right Front Inner CV Boot
The customer states there is a burning smell coming from the vehicle.
Performed a road test to duplicate the customer’s concern and found there was a burning smell that came from the vehicle. Also observed a small amount of smoke seeped from under the hood. Placed the vehicle on a lift and inspected the underside of the vehicle. The inspection revealed the right front inner constant velocity (CV) boot was cracked and had leaked grease onto the exhaust parts, which caused the burning smell once the vehicle reached operating temperature.
Replaced the right front inner CV boot, performed a road test and verified the vehicle operated properly. The customer’s concern did not return.
